When I was a kid, I wanted to be Mr. Spock from Star Trek. In high school, I became fascinated with writing computer programs. Although I considered studying computer science in college, my father convinced me that I should prefer physics. I received a Ph.D. in physics, but I have the feeling that I don't deserve the title because I did not remain in the field after earning my degree. Although I mention it here, I don't ever refer to myself as "doctor", and I don't sign my e-mail messages with "Ph.D." after my name. But perhaps I am a bit of a hypocrite for spending so much space on the matter here. Along the way I managed somehow to find a woman who would have me. So I married her, and we started having kids. We now have seven. It seemed that I could best provide for my family by writing software, and so I am a software engineer in the aerospace industry. I probably could have provided better by choosing to write software in a different industry, but I wanted at least to have some chance of taking advantage of my training in physics and astronomy. At the moment, I write simulation and flight software for star trackers; that is, at least when I'm actually writing software. I've discovered that, ironically, a software engineer doesn't get to write much software. In the late 1990s, my wife and I, who were nominally Catholic, became actually Catholic. The Church continues to be much more interesting, reasonable, and challenging than I ever realized when I was younger.
